A limited edition print is a reproduction of an artwork made in a fixed, publicly stated number of copies — and never reprinted once that number is reached. At Gallory, that number is tiny: every artwork is released in an edition of just 1 to 5 prints, each signed by the artist and printed under their direct supervision.

If you have ever wondered what the small numbers like "2/5" in the corner of a print mean, or why a limited edition is worth more than a poster of the same image, this guide explains it.

What exactly is a limited edition print?

An edition is the full set of prints made from one artwork. In a limited edition, the artist decides the size of that set in advance and commits to it. Once the last print is sold, the edition is closed for good.

This is what separates a limited edition from the other ways an image can reach your wall:

How edition numbering works

Each print in a limited edition carries a fraction, usually written in pencil near the signature. The number on the right is the edition size; the number on the left is that print's place in the edition.

  • 3/5 means print number three in an edition of five.
  • 1/1 means a unique print: the only one that will ever exist.

You may also see AP (artist's proof). These are a small number of extra prints kept by the artist, traditionally to check colour and quality before the edition is printed. They are marked separately and are not counted in the edition number.

Why edition size matters

The smaller the edition, the closer each print is to an original. Many galleries release prints in editions of 50, 100 or even several hundred. Each copy is legitimate, but it is one of many.

A small edition matters for three reasons:

  1. Scarcity. Fewer copies means fewer owners, and a closed edition can never grow.
  2. Connection to the artist. In a small edition, the artist can realistically sign and approve every single print.
  3. Value over time. Scarcity, a signature and a clear record of authenticity are what collectors look for when a work changes hands.

No one can promise a print will rise in value. But a small, signed edition gives a work the qualities that collectible art is built on.

What limited edition means at Gallory

At Gallory, limited edition means ultra-limited. Every artwork is released in an edition of 1 to 5 prints, set by the artist. When those prints are sold, the edition is closed.

Every Gallory print comes with three commitments:

  • Signed by the artist. Each print carries the artist's signature.
  • Printed under the artist's supervision. The artist approves the print before it reaches you, so what you receive is what the artist intended.
  • Printed and shipped in the Netherlands. Your print is produced on demand in the Netherlands and sent directly to you.

Gallory works with artists from Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, many of whom are rarely seen by collectors outside their region. A Gallory edition lets you own a signed, approved work by one of these artists, at a fraction of the price of an original, and shared with no more than four other collectors in the world.

Art without borders, in five copies or fewer.

What to check when buying a limited edition print

Wherever you buy, these questions tell you whether a "limited edition" really is one:

  • Is the edition size stated? A real limited edition names its number. "Limited" with no number means little.
  • Is it numbered? Look for a fraction such as 2/5.
  • Is it signed? A signature links the print to the artist.
  • Was the artist involved? Ask whether the artist approved the print.
  • Will it be reprinted? A closed edition should stay closed, including in other sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a limited edition print an original artwork? No. The original is the work the artist made by hand. A limited edition print is an authorised reproduction, made in a fixed number and approved by the artist. With an edition of five or fewer, it sits much closer to the original than a mass-produced print.

Why are Gallory editions so small? Because scarcity and the artist's involvement are the point. With 1 to 5 prints, the artist can sign and approve every one.

What happens when an edition sells out? It is closed. The work will not be printed again as part of that edition.

What does 1/1 mean? The artist chose an edition of one. You would own the only print of that work.
